Prof. Gestri is professor of International Law and Director of the Centre for Research on the European Union at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy). He also teaches international law at the Johns Hopkins University, SAIS Europe, Bologna.

He lectured on the same subject at University of Pisa, Italy; Naval Academy of Livorno, Italy; Military Academy of Modena, Italy. Visiting Professor at Syracuse University, New York, USA (1988-1989); Universidad Rafael Landivar, Guatemala (1992-1994); Moscow Institute for International Relations, Russia (MGIMO), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russia (1999); LUISS, Rome, Italy (2002-2004); University of Zaragoza, Spain (2003-2005); Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2010).

He worked as an expert for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guatemala (1992-1994), Egypt (1996)  and at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN in New York (1994). Professor Gestri is a member of the Istituto Affari Internazionali, based in Rome. He is the author and editor of several books and articles on international law and EU Law. Member of the board of editors of the review Diritto del turismo and of the editorial committee of the Italian Yearbook of International Law.

Among his publications: International Disaster Response Law, co-editor (2012); The Motor Vehicle in the New European Legal Framework, editor (2012); Accesso alla giustizia dell'individuo nel diritto internazionale e dell'Unione europea, co-editor (2008); Legal Remedies against Security Council Targeted Sanctions, in Italian Yearbook of International Law (2008); Il principio precauzionale nel diritto internazionale e comunitario, co-editor (2006).
