Managing International Relations


There are two parts to the Managing International Relations course:
1) an introductory unit delivered via MOOC (Massive Online Open Course)
2) a full and complete E-learning course

Those who choose to take part only in Part 2 will be given access to all the materials delivered via MOOC in Part 1.

Part One (MOOC): The starting point

Dates:  June 8th – July 13th

Part One (MOOC) will provide:
a) a methodological basis to start moving in the "troubled waters" of analysis of international relations;
b) basic knowledge for managing the major geopolitical and geo-economic issues; ability to deal with data collection and analysis, and to be aware of the key elements of international negotiations.

Introduction – Managing international relations
What is the profile of a manager in international relations? What knowledge and skills are needed to manage international relations?

Module 1 - International scenario of the 21st century
How is the international system changing and what are the main challenges we are facing?

Module 2 - Managing complexity in a changing world
The Middle East as an example of complexity

Module 3 - Toolkit for the manager
The strategic role of information        

Module 4 - Bargaining in a complex world               
Strategies and tools for confronting complex situations with successful outcomes

d) Discussion Forum

Part One (MOOC) will require an average of 12 hours of work/study in total.

Part Two (E-learning course): Analyzing and understanding the complexity of a changing world

Dates: September 14th – October 19th

The E-learning course, Analyzing and understanding the complexity of a changing world, is made up of 4 modules dealing with key aspects of analysis of international relations:
- Methodology and skills for analysis of international relations and subsequent dissemination of outcomes
- Open Source Intelligence on key international relations events and dynamics;
- Major current geopolitical and geo-economic issues;
- Fundamental elements in key international negotiation processes


Module 1 - International Relations Analysis

Module 2 - Open Source Intelligence
Primary instructor: Leonida REITANO –  Associazione di Giornalismo Investigativo (AGI)
Expert: Mark W. LOWE – Monact Ltd. ("The strategic role of OSINT in international relations management")

Module 3 - Geopolitics and Geo-economics
Primary instructor: Aldo PIGOLI– Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore
Expert: Paul DEMBINSKI – University of Fribourg ("Major international economic and financial trends in the coming years")

Module 4 - International Negotiations
Primary instructor: Manuela TORTORA – former UNCTAD officer
Expert: Paolo LEMBO – World Green Economy Organisation ("The role of environmental issues in international negotiations")

The topics will be dealt with from both theoretical and practical perspectives, with exercises, analyses and a final simulation. There will be a primary instructor for each module and additional academics and experts will contribute opinions and analyses.
