From Liberal Hegemony to Hegemonic Contestation

Jörg Friedrichs - Associate Professor at the Oxford Department of International Development and Fellow of St Cross College, University of Oxford - reflects on the transformation of the contemporary international order, arguing that the current crisis of the liberal international order cannot be attributed to the Trump presidency alone, but signals a deeper structural shift. From a historical perspective, Friedrichs explores the transition from liberal hegemony to hegemonic contestation, showing how pre-liberal doctrines such as mercantilism and raison d’état are re-emerging under new guises in the contemporary world (dis)order.
