The first part of the essay deals with the analysis of the long war of the USA and NATO in Afghanistan, from the intervention of 2001 to the progressive change of objectives to the clear delineation of political and military defeat; in the second, it offers an examination and an assessment of the Italian participation in the ISAF (2003-2014) and Resolute Support (2015-2019) missions; in the third, finally, he foresees the bitter "farewell to Kabul" and the inglorious end of the twenty-year war with the return of the Taliban to power.

Gastone Breccia, born in Livorno in 1962, teaches Byzantine Civilization and Ancient Military History at the University of Pavia. Author of numerous essays on historical-military subjects, he spent a period in Afghanistan in 2011 with the Italian troops; on the subject, in addition to the more recent Missione fallita, he has written La tomba degli imperi (Milan, Mondadori, 2013) and Le guerre afgane (Bologna, Il Mulino, 2014).
