In Sovrane Annarosa Buttarelli interprets thoughts, practices and policies created by women who have consolidated their authority throughout history, based on the ordering principle of human relationships and regulated by the laws of life rather than by male law, hierarchies or the excessive power of money. Thus a gallery of portraits is composed, women protagonists who have indicated a "different" way of doing politics and governing. Patriarchy now seems to be waning as a form of domination over women's minds and bodies, but political, cultural and religious institutions are still largely dominated by monosexual logics and an often unconscious misogyny. No institutional reform can be effective if a new coexistence between men and women is not achieved; This can only arise by revolutionizing the way of understanding the concept of sovereignty, which must be radically different from that which has oriented monarchical absolutism, representative democracy and, finally, the attempts to contain the disintegration of nation-states. The illuminating examples of the past are flanked by contemporary experiences, and in the work of these courageous and aware women the liberating power of authority stands out, provided that it maintains its feminine roots and its sapiential environment, and freedom is understood as the recovery of the political and existential priority of relationships – the fabric that sustains our lives. Because only female authority can originate a practice of sovereignty capable of regenerating public institutions and governing the world without appropriating them.
Today we can see two revolutions underway, which emerge clearly through the new contributions offered by the author: the populist revolt and the transformative path of women. This is the scenario in which we find ourselves: women and people. The prophecy of the historical crossroads between the advance of women's authority and the return of the political problem of the people has come true as a visible reality, and we need work of thought and listening, which helps the sovereign position of women to tear the people away from populism.
