Can America continue to be a world superpower, or is it facing a decline with no return? One of the leading scholars of American foreign policy, Michael Cox, in his latest book Agonies of Empire outlines the ways in which five very different American presidents – Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump and now Biden – have dealt with the complex political legacy of their predecessors, dealing with long-term problems, in managing an empire under increasing stress. In dialogue with Vittorio Emanuele Parsi, director of ASERI and well-known scholar of geopolitics, a framework will be defined for rereading the foreign policy of the United States from the end of the Cold War to today, from post-communism to the era of terrorism (Clinton-Bush Jr), from a post-American world to the era of populism (Obama-Trump), up to the confused current era, where what will weigh most could be the ability to rebuild the unity of the country.

Michael Cox, a British academic, is Professor Emeritus of International Relations at the London School of Economics (LSE) and founding director of LSE IDEAS. He is an associate member of the USA and Americas program at Chatham House, a member of the Scholarly Advisory Board of the Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History in New York, and is a regular contributor to H-Diplo. He is the author of numerous essays, including The Post-Cold War World (2018), US Foreign Policy (with D. Stokes, 2018), and has edited the editions of J.M. Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace (2019) and E.H. Carr, Nationalism and After (2021). Agonie dell'impero is his first title translated into Italian.
