Who rules the world? Globalization imposes new answers to this age-old question. Using a heretical and never complacent gaze, Fabio Armao reconstructs the tangled web of power in the twenty-first century, accompanying the reader in some places – from Sicily to Afghanistan, from the United States to Cambodia, from London to Ciudad Juárez, to Delhi – in which a new form of "neoliberal totalitarianism" has manifested itself with dramatic evidence: the rebirth of the clan as a reference structure of the social system. And it is precisely the clan that is the common thread that unites real social pathologies such as mafias, gangs, neo-fascism, underground finance, crony capitalism, femicide, ecocide and privatization of war.
The Autoimmune Society is an introspective analysis of politics and the ways of studying it, the public diary of a political scientist who wonders why the methods, categories and language of the social sciences do not seem to have renewed themselves after the historical fracture of 1989, often closing his eyes to the processes that led to the triumph of economic (private) interests over (public) political ones.

Fabio Armao is Professor of International Relations at the Inter-University Department of Science, Design and Territorial Policies of the University of Turin. Author of Il sistema mafia (2000) and In¬side War (2016), with Meltemi he has published L'età dell'oikocrazia (2020) and Le reti del potere (2020). He collaborates with the magazine "MicroMega".
