In the ideas of the great pacifist thinkers of the modern age we find the legal and political bases of today's international institutions. This volume collects the most significant "peace projects" proposed by Penn, the Abbé de Saint-Pierre, Rousseau, Bentham, Madison, Kant and Fichte. Each author is introduced by a reading guide, with a historical and philosophical look that illustrates their vision.
What has been achieved of what these intellectuals have courageously imagined? And what still remains to be built, in an era in which international organizations show their fragility? For too long these voices have been ignored, if not mocked, yet their ideas have given rise to the UN General Assembly, the European Parliament, the International Court of Justice.
Rereading this bold tradition means understanding that in order to avert the scourge of war it is necessary to strengthen and often reinvent the role of those who act as mediators, arbiters or even judges in global politics. The pacifist ideal must measure itself against the principles and practices of democracy and human rights on a planetary scale in order to break the vicious circle that fuels the conflicts of our time.
