To the eyes of a Westerner, the Middle East may seem pure chaos: a web of latent conflicts and precarious alliances that make it, at first glance, indecipherable. The truth is that we call it "chaos" because we do not have the categories to read it. Yet it is precisely there that some of the decisive balances of our time are at stake. To orient oneself, one must start with two essential questions: who really exercises power in the region? And what forces are working to redesign its future?

Journalist and profound connoisseur of the Arab world, Laura Silvia Battaglia helps us to follow the threads that bind Tehran to Doha, Sana'a to Riyadh. At the center is Iran, the strategic pivot of a system of alliances and militias known as the Axis of Resistance, grappling with its deepest crisis since the founding of the Islamic Republic in 1979. All around, the unresolved knots of a common history intertwine: coups d'état, proxy wars, religious apparatuses and economic powers that compete for the scene, civil societies that resist in unprecedented and courageous ways.
