Gian Luca Cazzaniga, former journalist, is currently an international adviser. He recently served as a security sector reform adviser in the EU. police and rule of law mission in support of Palestine. Previously he held the same position in the EU police and rule of law mission in Afghanistan. From 2011 to 2014 he worked an embedded political adviser in ISAF Regional Command West in Herat, western Afghanistan.

The main aim of the lecture is to familiarise the students with six issues: the comprehensive approach to conflicts and crises; military operations and civilian missions; executive mandates and non-executive mandates; permissive environments and non-permissive environments; requirements to work in missions and operations; key lessons identified.
