The volume fills an existing gap in Italian-language journalism, offering an agile, but methodologically sound, tool to better understand the complexity of the political processes in the Middle East. Aimed at both those attending university courses and those looking for a compact and easy reference, this volume illustrates the turning points of contemporary history and political thought in the Middle East, incorporating the main debates underway in the fields of political science, historiography and anthropology. The interweaving of different disciplinary worlds is the lens used to deepen the knowledge of the Middle East area sheltered from excessive simplifications: a tool for synthesizing the political theories that have most affected the intellectual debate and events of a central region in the balances and tensions of the world.
Rosita Di Peri is Associate Professor in Political Science and International Relations at the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society of the University of Turin. His research interests focus mainly on the theme of democracy and authoritarianism with a particular focus on the Middle East and contemporary Lebanon. She is scientific coordinator of the Summer School "Understanding the Middle East" and member of the board of SeSaMO (Society for Middle East Studies). She has published articles in national and international journals, edited several volumes and is the author of the volume Il Libano contemporaneo (Carocci).
Francesco Mazzucotelli teaches History and Culture of the Middle East at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Pavia. His research interests focus on religious and ethnic identities and the history of Middle Eastern urban spaces. He collaborates with the Master in Middle Eastern Studies at ASERI (Graduate School of Economics and International Relations) in Milan. He has published in Italian magazines («Storia Urbana», «Oriente Moderno», «Il Politico») and is the author of chapters in several international collective volumes.
