The volume traces the political evolution of the People's Republic of China in recent decades through two different interpretative keys: the ideological changes of the Communist Party and the attempts to democratize the Leninist system, examined in the eighties, but then set aside after the Tian'anmen massacre.
The subsequent prospects in the direction of a democracy "with Chinese characteristics", which emerged in the changed political climate of the nineties and noughties, are examined in parallel with the theoretical statements of the various leaders who succeeded each other in power, starting with Deng Xiaoping. Beyond the propaganda aspects, the analysis of these doctrinal formulations is useful to highlight the peculiar transformations of the Party and Chinese society in the different periods considered.
Marina Miranda is a full professor of Contemporary Chinese History at the University of Rome "Sapienza" and, at the same university, scientific director of the East Asia section of the PhD in Asian and African Civilizations, of which she was coordinator for two terms. She is president of the Italian Association for Chinese Studies (AISC), director of the 'Studi orientali' series published by libreriauniversitaria.it Edizioni and member of the Scientific and Editorial Committee of some well-known journals. In addition to numerous essays, she is the author and editor of the following volumes: National Identity in the XXI Century in China, Japan, Korea, Tibet and Taiwan (2012); Democracy in China: the different formulations from the 80s to today (2013); China after 2012 (2013); Politics, society and culture of a rising China (2016); China forty years after Mao (2017).
Giuseppe Gabusi is Professor of International Political Economy and East Asian Political Economy at the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society of the University of Turin. He is one of the founders of the Torino World Affairs Institute (T.wai), where he directs the Asia Prospects program. He has been a visiting scholar at the Australian National University, the East-West Center in Honolulu and Warwick University. He wrote The Import of Capitalism.
