From the world's factory to a high-tech giant, China has become one of the world's most important powers, and it is precisely by reading through the meshes of its relationship with technology and innovation that it is possible to better understand its historical development and complexity. Simone Pieranni, one of the leading experts on China in Italy, traces the history of the People's Republic from 1949 to the present day, through an interweaving of fascinating events never told before at the center of which the stories of hitherto unknown women and men stand out. It is the portrait of an era of epic discoveries and political turns, glittering ideas and gigantic mistakes: from computer science to family planning, from the first forms of industrial automation to the semiconductor race, from genetics to the first laser, from the atomic bomb to space conquests. Documented by unpublished sources and exhilarating in their gait, Tecnocina's stories come to light by composing a tight and compelling book, which vividly reconstructs a past that was already future and that can help us understand tomorrow.
