Professor Dr. Ludger Kühnhardt was Director of the Centre for European Integration Studies (ZEI) and Professor of Political Science at the Institute of Political Science and Sociology at the University of Bonn from 1997 to 2024. Professor Kühnhardt's research has focused on European integration, Europe's global role, comparative research on regional groupings around the world, and topics in political theory and philosophy.

 

Kühnhardt began a journalistic career that included extensive study trips to Asia and Africa. He has worked for print and radio stations and has been the author of numerous documentary films for German television. In 1977 he received the German Catholic Journalist Award. He studied history, political science and philosophy in Bonn, Geneva, Harvard and Tokyo. He received his PhD in 1983 and his "habilitation" in 1986, both times specializing in political science at the University of Bonn. Between 1985 and 1987 Kühnhardt was a research assistant to Prof. Dr. Drs. hc. Karl Dietrich Bracher at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Bonn. From 1987 to 1989 he worked as a speechwriter for the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Richard von Weizsäcker.

 

Between 1991 and 1997 Kühnhardt held the chair of political science at the Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg and in 1994/95 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. He has been a guest professor at prestigious universities (Capetown, Jena, College of Europe, Dartmouth College, Stanford University, Seoul National University, St.Antony's College Oxford, Canterbury University Christchurch, Tongji University Shanghai, Universidade Federal de Santa Catalina Florianopolis), regularly lecturing throughout Europe (Graduate School of Economics and International Relations (ASERI) of the Catholic University of Milan, Diplomatic Academy Vienna, Mediterranean Academic of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) Malta) and has been a visiting researcher in Europe and the United States (St Antony's College Oxford, Institute for Human Science Vienna, Hoover Institution of Stanford University, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars Washington DC) The Woodrow Wilson Center has appointed him one of its Global Fellows. In 2004 he was awarded the European Science Prize of the European Cultural Foundation at the Saxon State Parliament. Kühnhardt has been a member of the editorial board of several international journals in the field of political science.

 

Kühnhardt has served on several academic and advisory councils (Goerres Society, Collegium Europaeum Jenense, Institute of International Relations Warsaw, Commission for Social and Social Issues of the German Bishops' Conference, European Studies in Asia of the Asia-Europe Foundation in Singapore, West African Institute in Praia, European University of Humanities in Vilnius). After German unification, he was actively involved in the Program Commission of the German Christian Democratic Union. He was a member of the European Independent Commission for the Global Review of the Institutions and Procedures of the European Union (ICRI), the steering committee of the German-British conference in Königswinter and the conferences of young leaders of the Atlantic Bridge. He has advised various governments of the EU candidate countries in Central and South-Eastern Europe and the Bulgarian-Romanian European Inter-University Centre (BRIE) in Rousse (Bulgaria) and, since his retirement, is active on the Board of Directors of the Central Europe Forum at the Saxon State Parliament. Kühnhardt has been a member of the editorial board of several international journals in the field of political science.
