Donald Trump has rebuilt the Republican Party in his own image by launching a heterogeneous popular movement with the red MAGA cap on his head, thanks to his charismatic skills and exploiting resentments and conspiracies. The rationality of political discourse does not belong to him, on the contrary, he has made anti-intellectualism a flag. Behind the apparent chaos of Trump-thought, however, a much more structured movement has aggregated than one might think: a galaxy of intellectuals, activists and politicians who have elaborated a radical critique of American liberal democracy. This galaxy is divided into three areas: post-liberal, illiberal and hyperliberal. The former include academics such as Patrick Deneen and Adrian Vermeule, who see liberal democracy as a system worn out by its own contradictions. The illiberals include the national-conservatives, the hub of the global right installed in Hungary under the patronage of Viktor Orbán and the neo-reactionaries ideally led by Curtis Yarvin, under the banner of the "dark enlightenment". Finally, the hyperliberals: libertarians convinced of the value of the liberal system but in favor of its radical transformation, including the investor Peter Thiel, followed by Elon Musk and a patrol of visionaries, transhumanists and colonizers of the elsewhere. At the crossroads of these worlds is Vice President JD Vance, the most intellectual of the figures surrounding Trump. With journalistic rigor and a broad philosophical gaze, Mattia Ferraresi reconstructs the cultural ferment that precedes and survives Trump, showing how the battle for America's "greatness" concerns first and foremost the very meaning of liberal democracy in this historical phase. From Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's prophecy about the totalitarian West delivered at Harvard in 1978 to the opioid crisis, from Seattle's fight against globalization to Vladimir Putin's speech in Munich in 2007: the signs of a profound transformation were already there.
