Andrew Spannaus is an American journalist and political analyst, known for anticipating the populist uprising in the United States and Europe. He comments on American politics and the transformations of world strategic relations. He is the founder of the newsletter "Transatlantico.info", columnist for Il Messaggero, and collaborates with Radio 24, RaiNews 24 and RSI (Swiss Radio and Television). He hosts, with Alessandro Milan, the original Radio 24 podcast "That's America – Behind the scenes of the United States". He is a lecturer at the Graduate School of Economics and International Relations (ASERI) of the Catholic University of Milan and has been Managing Director of the Foreign Press Association of Milan several times. He sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of the NATO Defense College Foundation. He is the author of the books "Why Trump wins" (2016), "The revolt of the voters" (2017), "Post-global America. Trump, the coronavirus and the future" (2020) and "Revenge. The American enigma explained to Europeans" (2024).

As the mid-term elections approach in the United States, and Donald Trump is gradually checked by the other national institutions, the question that will define the future is whether there is a coherent geopolitical project behind this administration's actions that goes beyond the America First bullying from the current White House. The military actions in Venezuela and Iran confirm the intention to exert further control over energy flows, which dovetails with the broader aim of slowing the emergence of alternative economic systems independent of US (and European) influence. Natural resources and financial circuits are key elements in the slow-motion fight to determine whether a new system will arise, led by China and the BRICS countries, able to replace the liberal international order through which the West has exercised global dominance.
In the meantime, the US institutions must work to ensure that Donald Trump's impetuous actions – both domestically and internationally – do not actually undermine the broader goals considered by the establishment as necessary to correct the flaws of globalization over recent decades. The president's reaction to these attempts to limit his power will ensure the continuation of the political roller coaster in the coming months.
