If a diplomatic alliance becomes the heart of public debate – all the more so now that Europe has once again become the scene of conflict – it is necessary to know its past and deep roots: how it was born, how it developed, why it entered into crisis, what the parties involved think about it. This valuable book by diplomat Lorenzo Trapassi does exactly that, reconstructing the network of diplomatic relations between West Germany, Italy, the Holy See, and the United States in the early years of the Cold War, with a particular emphasis on relations between Bonn and Washington. Through the lens of analysis of the human and psychological factor in international relations, the author provides us with a glimpse of an era in which the world seemed one step away from another breakdown of the geopolitical balance, after the two world wars.
Lorenzo Trapassi is an Italian diplomat and is currently in charge of staff training at the Foreign Ministry, with particular attention to European integration and public diplomacy. Previously, he served at the Italian Embassies in Brasilia and Berlin. He teaches courses in geopolitics and diplomacy at La Sapienza, Luiss and the University of Teramo. He is a member of the Institute of International Affairs (IAI) and the Center for American Studies. For Luiss University Press he has already published The Land of the Future (2020).
Gabriele Natalizia teaches International Relations at the Department of Political Science of Sapienza University of Rome.
