Caught between multiple strategic pressures from different corners of the international system, the European Union is increasingly compelled to reconsider its role within a rapidly shifting global nuclear order. The expiration of the New START treaty, renewed nuclear threats from Russia under Vladimir Putin, the escalating military tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, which are placing increasing strain on non-proliferation agreements, and the foreign policies of the United States led by Donald Trump—including the attack on Iran justified by concerns over its nuclear program—have contributed to an increasingly unstable and fragmented international environment, in which European security can no longer be taken for granted.

Amb. Klement, Dr. Divsallar and Dr. Perletta will discuss the challenges of proliferation, deterrence, and strategic autonomy in this turbulent context for the European Union, which strives to find a way forward while navigating its own internal divisions.
